Belgian Malinois was originally bred as one of the varieties of
Shepherd dogs, that’s why his background is watching or herding
sheep. In general, Malinois may do different jobs. For example, he
is a perfect guard or protection dog for a family. However, Belgian
Malinois is more often used as a police dog.
Why Belgian Malinois is a great police dog? Police dog should have
excellent nose and a keen intellect, because police often search for
drugs, bombs and guns. Moreover, police dog should be loyal
and willing to protect his owner no matter what. Belgian Malinois
has all the aforementioned features and he is also alert to the
surroundings. That’s why Belgian Malinois is a terrific police dog.
Belgian Malinois is often used by police officers, who work in
airports, train and subway stations, because he has perfect scent.
His keen nose is able to find drugs and bombs, when trained to do
so. He can easily smell and identify scents, because of high level
of “sniffling” drive. Belgian Malinoises do a great job of finding
things simply by smell.
There is one more reason why Malinois is used as a police dog. He
has strong protection instinct. The dogs of the breed are very loyal
to their owners, and once the bond was created, they will protect
them. Malinoises aren’t normally aggressive, however they can be
taught to serve and protect their owners.
Belgian Malinois is very alert, that’s why he is perfect for police
work. He was breeded as a shepherd dog, remember? Thus, he needed to
know where his flock was and if there were strays. This feature is
still present in today’s Belgian Malinois.
Belgian Malinois is quick to react to situations. This isn’t well
know feature of the breed, however it makes him a good police dog.
In fact, Malinois reacts even faster than the German Shepherd in
situations, that often occur in law enforcement. So he is slightly
better dog, than the German Shepherd for some situations. The slight
build of Belgian Malinois also makes him faster, than The German
Shepherd. For example, Belgian Malinois is preferred to other breeds
by the Unit Oketz, that is a part of the Israel Defence Forces. This
Unit chooses Malinois exactly because of his slight build and, of
course, other features, that make him tremendous police dog.
